RCLIP is looking forward to co-hosting a seminar on AI training and copyright with the AIPPI (International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property).
Date: September 12, 2025, 15:30 – 17:30
Location: Ono Auditorium of Waseda University
Language: Japanese & English (simultaneous translation)
Co-Hosts: Waseda University Research Center for the Legal System of Intellectual Property (RCLIP), International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI)
Overview: Held on the margins of the AIPPI World Congress in Yokohama, this academic seminar offers an opportunity for AIPPI participants to engage with leading voices from Japanese IP law academia, paying tribute to the important role that academic scholars play in shaping Japanese IP discussion and legislation.
Japan has long been at the forefront of copyright and AI debates, including the adoption of the world’s earliest text and data mining (TDM) exceptions. This seminar will bring together two of the country’s most distinguished IP law professors: Professor Tatsuhiro Ueno (Waseda University), Japan’s foremost expert on copyright and its intersection with AI, and Professor Yoshiyuki Tamura (University of Tokyo), a leading authority in all areas of intellectual property law and arguably Japan’s most influential IP law scholar, who will lead the discussion on the intersection of AI and Japanese copyright law. The two professors will be joined by a representative of the Japanese content industry as well as of the Japanese tech industry. Finally, Guillaume Henry (First Deputy Reporter General of AIPPI) will share certain highlights of AIPPI’s initiative on AI and copyright law.
Hosted at Waseda University in central Tokyo and co-organized by the Research Center for the Legal System of Intellectual Property (RCLIP), and AIPPI, the seminar invites Congress attendees to experience an academic discussion in the setting of a leading Japanese university and to become more familiar with the Japanese IP law community outside the confines of the AIPPI congress.
