Our Mission

At the Waseda University Research Center for the Legal System of Intellectual Property (RCLIP), located in the heart of Tokyo, we are dedicated to advancing the understanding and application of intellectual property (IP) law. Our mission is to foster an environment where academic rigor meets practical application, creating a hub for innovative research and legal scholarship in IP law. Recognizing the vital role that intellectual property rights play in encouraging creativity and technological advancement, we are committed to exploring the dynamic interplay between IP law and the fast-paced technological world.

RCLIP was established in 2004 as part of the Japanese government's Global Center of Excellence program. Since its foundation, RCLIP has been serving as an important bridge, connecting Japanese and international legal scholars, judges, practitioners, industry experts, and policymakers, facilitating dialogue and collaboration that shapes the future of IP law in Japan and beyond. Members of RCLIP are considered as thought-leaders in IP law in Japan and beyond, and contribute to the development of the IP law through publications and other forms of discourse. We take pride in working with leading global academics around the world, and regularly co-host international programs with top research institutes from the US, Europe, and Asia. RCLIP is also committed to foster and support legal education in the area of IP law; boasting the largest graduate level IP law curriculum in Japan, we have in 2018 initiated the first specialized IP law LLM course taught at any top university in Japan, a program that has attracted outstanding students every year and greatly enriches the RCLIP community. As we move forward, RCLIP envisions itself as a distinguished center of excellence in intellectual property law, continually enriching academic understanding and contributing to the evolution of IP law practices through our research, scholarship, and educational initiatives.
